With the advent of Gastric Bypass surgery, that started about twenty years ago, we're seeing a lot more patients coming in with extra skin on their arms and thighs. Massive weight loss patients have had significant weight loss due to Lap Band, Bariatric surgery or dieting, Their weight loss after bariatric Surgery can range anywhere from 40 pounds up to 140 pounds.
Some massive weight loss patients are very fortunate after their Gastric Bypass Surgery. Their skin tightens up, and they are looking wonderful. Unfortunately, there are also a significant amount of patients that, although they have lost the weight, the skin doesn¹t follow suit, and the skin hangs on the upper and lower extremities on their arms and thighs. Hhaving all that extra skin is not only a cosmetic problem, but can also be quite uncomfortable.
After massive weight loss the extra skin rubs against other parts of the body when they walk and move their arms. It rubs against clothing, and it is distinctly uncomfortable for them to deal with in their daily routine.
Its for these patients that Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery (Arm Lift, Thigh Lift, Body Lift procedures) are specifically designed. This involves incisions, there is a scar, and we try to involve the scar in a hidden position under the arms, as well as a hidden position under the thighs.
