Recovery From Chemical Peels
There are different reactions to chemical peels, which range from mild to more pronounced and are similar to a sunburn. Usually, deeper peels require longer periods of recovery.
Some redness and possible scaling are usually the results from a light peel and may last a few days. Medium and deep peels can end up in swelling and create blisters that break open and form a brown crust, followed by peeling that can last up to two weeks. These types of peels some times required dressings on some or possibly all of the treated skin, which are removed after a couple of days. The dressings are accompanied by ointments and creams that keep the skin moist. At first, the new skin will have the appearance of a substantial sunburn, which will gradually fade to a pink color over the next few weeks. Cosmetics can be applied after a period around two weeks. After a chemical peel, your new skin will be more taut, smoother, and a shade lighter than it was pre-surgery.
It is important that, following the skin peel, you avoid any exposure to the sun because you new skin is very suceptible to injury and extremely sensitive. To avoid any injury due to sun exposure, apply a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB light blocking) sunblock of at least SPF 15 about twenty minutes before you go outdoors. Your surgeon will forumulate a proper home skin-care treatment plan to make sure you heal properly.
